After the revolution, Khamenei held various positions, including President of Iran from 1981 to 1989. In 1989, he was appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. As Supreme Leader, Khamenei has the highest political and religious authority in Iran.
