Trump, a Target of DOJ Probe, Receives Subpoena

Former President Faces Federal Grand Jury Appearance

Letter Outlines Investigation into Jan. 6 Attack

Former President Donald Trump has received a subpoena from a federal grand jury, marking a significant escalation in the Justice Department's investigation into his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

The subpoena was issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office and delivered to Trump on Sunday. It informs him that he is a "target" of the grand jury's investigation.

A target letter is an official communication from the Justice Department indicating that the recipient is being investigated. It does not constitute a formal charge but signals that the government is actively gathering evidence against the individual.

The subpoena requires Trump to appear before the grand jury on May 10. It also requests that he produce documents related to the Jan. 6 events.

The move comes as the Justice Department's special counsel, Jack Smith, has taken over the investigation into Trump's involvement in the Capitol attack. Smith is also overseeing the probe into Trump's handling of classified documents after he left office.

The subpoena is a major development in the ongoing investigation and could lead to criminal charges against Trump. It also raises questions about whether he will invoke executive privilege to avoid testifying or producing documents.
